Students will be asked about the 4 seasons. Can they name them all? Does our environment look the same during all these seasons? What are some of the things we would see or do in the summer? What about the winter? What season is it right now? How do they know this – what signs have they seen that tell us it is fall? (students will likely discuss the changing colors, falling leaves, colder weather)
-
Students discuss the signals plants may use to tell them that spring is here and it’s time to start growing. Following this activity students head outside to complete a winter scavenger hunt and discover how plants may change during winter months. Wrap up: discuss students’ answers and seasonal differences.
-
An experiment that has students stretch hosiery over the rim of a baby food jar and after adding soil and grass seeds. Students create Soil Sammy – the grass becomes hair. Older students can experiment with fertilizer, soil types and water balance.
-
Discuss soil contents (nutrients, minerals, bits of leaves, decaying material), origins (erosion, break down of decay, animal waste), importance (feed/anchor plants), types and characteristics. Students examine and describe each type of soil. Outside students find and describe different types of soil. Wrap-up: review soil characteristics and uses.
-
Students use their angle skills to measure and sketch different angles found in the schoolyard. Wrap up: Discuss different objects chosen by students.
